In early September 2020, it became known that Apple would invest in the construction of the world’s two largest onshore wind turbines. This decision will allow the company to approach 100% carbon-neutral balance of its entire business, manufacturing supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030.
The 200-meter turbines are expected to be installed near the Danish city of Esbjergie, producing 62 GWh per year. This is enough to power almost 20,000 homes. According to the company, the electricity generated in Esbjerg will support Apple’s 45,000-square-foot data center in Viborg. Surplus energy will flow into the Danish grid. This data center allows the company to support its core products, in particular Apple App Store, Apple Music, iMessage, Siri, as well as other services in Europe, which operate entirely on locally generated renewable energy.
Apple Vice President of Environmental, Political and Community Initiatives Lisa Jackson said that combating climate change requires prompt intervention and a global partnership. The project for the Viborg data center is powerful proof that Apple is ready to fight the problem.
” Investing in clean energy helps achieve breakthrough new innovative solutions that deliver clean energy and provide jobs for businesses and local communities. “
Varta, which is based in Germany, pledged to launch Apple’s 100% renewable energy production in early September 2020. Throughout Europe, Apple suppliers are working on clean energy solutions for Apple manufacturing. They are Henkel and Tesa SE (Germany), DSM Engineering Materials (Netherlands), Solvay (Belgium), STMicroelectronics (Switzerland).
